Stars Will Shine For Paul Simon
Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett and Gloria
Estefan to honor 2001 MusiCares Person Of The Year
Industry superstars and former MusiCares honorees Elton John, Stevie
Wonder, Tony Bennett and Gloria Estefan will be among the musicians
on-hand for the 2001 MusiCares Person Of The Year dinner, concert
and silent auction honoring GRAMMY Award-winning artist Paul Simon.
The gala, which takes place on February 19 at the Century Plaza Hotel
in Los Angeles, will also be attended by Ruben Blades, Shawn Colvin,
Dixie Hummingbirds, Macy Gray, Shelby Lynne, Ziggy Marley, Joan Osborne,
Danny Rivera, Take 6, and Brian Wilson.
The Person Of The Year tribute honors an individual for his artistic
and philanthropic achievements. Over his career, which has spanned
more than five decades, Simon has received 34 GRAMMY nominations and
won 16 GRAMMY Awards. His most recent album, You're The One,
is nominated in this year's Album Of The Year category.
"The opportunity to sing for Paul -- the chance to perform from Paul's
astoundingly rich songbook and pay homage to his generous spirit --
has generated a remarkable outpouring of interest from the artistic
community," said MusiCares and Recording Academy President/CEO Michael
Greene. "We are excited to have the opportunity to bring together
such a dynamic, diverse and creative group to honor Paul."
The gala will also include an auction featuring collectibles such
as music and sports memorabilia, artwork and other luxury items. For
the first time, the public will have an opportunity to bid on items
through a special live broadcast on QVC. Actor/musician Michael
McKean will serve as guest host and will interview celebrities such
as the Baha Men, Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men, Kenny Loggins and Shelby
Lynne. The special will also include discussion on the GRAMMY Awards
buzz and a look back on important milestones in music history that
helped shape today's musical genres.
Proceeds from the Person Of The Year event will provide support for
MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program which assists musicians in
times of financial, medical and personal need.
