Edgar Cool's
Jazz Boat Journals

July

"You must seek until you find. Only when you find what you have been looking for will you be able to truly stop seeking... Only when you have come home forever and you know without any doubt it is all over should yourself stop."
     Andrew Cohen

Edgar is home at the Jazz Boat but he hasn't stopped seeking. It's an over cast afternoon in the 70's. The "Beat Spirit" feeds the liberation and jazz is all around. Dexter Gorden's: "Doin Allright" C.D. is playing. Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Horace Parlen on piano, George Tucker on bass, Al Harewood on drums and Dexter Gorden on tenor. The seeking of Dexter Gorden is evident in the songs of his C.D.: "I was Doing All Right", "You've Changed", "For Regulars Only", "Society Red", "It's You or No One", "I Want More", "Here's to Our Jazz Life". Dexter found a lot. In our Pinot and Chardonay lives we all seek and Jazz is our sound track.

GORGE

Thirty days without rain
in the mouth of the gorge
The August dust creatures
wait for the Fall rains
The river flows higher
as the beaver dams
stop the ghosts of Celilo
Salmon fishing is remembered
The smoke from the village
rises to the top of Dog Mountain
Rock lizards stare at the dry sky
before scurrying up the Beacon
Who will say good bye to the sky?
