Edgar Cool's
Jazz Boat Journals

February

Oooh Bopaa Deee Yaah! Oooh Bopaa Deee Yaah! Scooo Deeta Deee Yaah! Scooo Deeta Deee Yaah!

So goes Edgar Cool's morning warm up on the Jazz Boat. The tide is coming in on Lake River. The diving ducks and Great Blue Herons are looking for a fish breakfast. Edgar Cool went from a "So What" day of yesterday, to a calmer "As Time Goes By" of today. The wood stove's flickering heat cuts the morning chill that is ever present living on the water in late Winter.

Things get "cooler" when Edgar plays Spike Robinson's "Reminiscin" C.D. Mundell Lowe, Monty Budwig and Jake Hanna join Spike's "Lush Life" tenor. It's cool. Edgar Cool does some "Reminiscin" of his own: "After the 50th anniversary showing of "Casablanca", Edgar and Angel Eyes walked down 23rd avenue with clicking steps like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. They finished each others rhythms and completed each others thoughts. Happy moments for unhappy people. He once loved a girl from Germany and she married her high school sweetheart and moved to Germany. In the end both of their Germanys had their Hitlers. That was long ago.

Walking home Edgar and Angel took the street through the dark hills. Up the black streets lay the regal houses of the West Hills. At night the houses looked dead. As if atheists, who no longer believed in their lives, lived in them now. These were the mansions of the people who built the city. They were the leaders of people. Today they are only names on tombstones. Later generations live in them now.

Angel grabbed Edgar's hand and pulled him towards a surprise dark stairway. Below they saw the bonfires of the city. Bonfires no longer burning, but captured in wires and glass. They walked unsteadily down the stairs not seeing the way. They paused on some of the steps as their hearts played an emotional saxophone.

Further down the stairs they stopped at a hidden alcove. They sat on a stone bench at the side of the stairs. Listening" to the night sounds, Angel rested her head on Edgar's shoulder. Their breath was cool, then warm. They had just met, but it was if they had been together for a hundred years, translated to that moment. Each line of their lips were engraved in each others hearts. Holding Angel Eyes closer, Edgar Cool knew it was that time between the idea and the kiss, from the wanting, the longing, the clinging- the "Prelude to a Kiss". Edgar kissed her then."

The rest of the day went well for Edgar Cool.
